Aprilis Series Brooch by Michelle Ni
“Aprilis“
In 2020, as a visiting scholar at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts, I found myself in isolation at home due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Watching the cherry blossoms outside my window transition from bloom to wither, I reflected on the brilliance and fragility of life. This series of works was born from that contemplation.
The English word April derives from the Latin Aprilis, which originates from aperio, meaning “to open”—a symbol of spring’s awakening. As Zhuangzi observed, “Life and death are simultaneous and cyclical; death gives birth to life, and life returns to death.” The blooming and fading of spring flowers mirror the universal rhythm of existence: new life emerges from decay, and the boundary between life and death dissolves, like the imperceptible shift between dreaming and waking. What we perceive as endings may simply be changes in perspective within the eternal flow of Dao. -Michelle, Xian Ou Ni
