Alex Tsai - Designer

a constantly growing collection that bears significance greater than body adornment.

This special piece of jewellery is one of my own creations, a ring made of brass and fine silver. It is the last prototype of Midas Ring that established the final design before it is made in gold, for me it's a token that sums up my very first experience working with gold, though less in material value compared to its finalized counterpart, it outweighs its kin in sentimental value.

I usually wear it on a casual day to meet friends, but definitely not on working days. It is usually kept in a clear compartment box along with other test pieces in an organized manner, illustrating the creative process for the design, a representation of my creative practice.

For me, I think a piece of jewellery can be seen from the perspectives of the creator, the wearer and a collector. For my own creations, it is an extension of the aesthetic that I adore. It is never my first priority to please the general public, but rather produce works that stays true to myself and in turn wish them would soon meet someone that appreciates it for what it is, much like a parent sending their children to kindergarten on their first day of school hoping that they'd make friends. When it comes to collecting, there are a few criteria that are the deciding factors for me. It could be I know the designer-maker in person, and I'd like to keep a piece of their work that suits my like as a token of our friendship, or that it captures a certain element in its design so well that I couldn't allow myself to not own it. (Whether it's a finely executed technical component, interesting composition and use of materials, or more often than not, adheres to a entomology motif.) Finally, whenever I acquire a new piece, I would always try my best to find a special occasion to make its debut, simply out of love for the piece.
