Pearls of Commonality by Belinda Chang
Subverting general preconception of what is considered precious-material, Belinda’s neckpiece invites us to reconsider the value of familiar items we often take for granted.
The relationship between jewellery, architecture and materialsis examined by juxtaposing the utilitarian and the ornamental. Found objects such as concrete fragments and scaffolding bamboo are made into precious conditions; fabricated into “pearls of commonality” through lapidary and jewellery- smithing techniques.
This piece acts as a wearable index of materials we encounter in everyday life.
Dimension: approximately 16 inches
Material: concrete, bamboo, tiles, brick, rock, brass, copper and glass
