KK - Tutor of jewellery design and crafts

Throughout decades of my jewelry teaching career, not only have I witnessed the transformation of Hong Kong’s jewelry industry, but also the growth of local emerging talents. These pieces not only affirm my professionalism but held precious memories I created with my students.

The serendipity between this student and I goes way back. His father was my tutor back when I was a student of advanced jewellery design. Then it so happened that I became his son’s tutor. In 2004-2005, we travelled to Finland for a worldwide jewellery arts competition, and the piece I wanted to share was from that almost legendary-like experience.

We were still focusing more on the technical side of our crafts back then, thus only joined hoping to broaden our horizon and learn from other artists around the world with different technical backgrounds. To our surprise, he claimed championship in that competition, and still to this day is the only jeweller from Hong Kong who was able to achieve the title. He then gifted me the bronze prototype of the awarded piece.  I almost see this piece as my professional career’s “transcript”, a piece that affirms and concludes my jewellery appraisal and expertise. With this I can say with pride that I am a "gold medal coach".

A semi-finished (practice) piece that symbolises as the reports of my teaching career:

Another remarkable piece was given by a student who transferred from higher diploma of jewellery design in Hong Kong to a bachelor’s degree of jewellery design in the UK. It was a brooch he made as a course assignment with distinct British design traits. He kept it and gifted to me after returning to Hong Kong. The brooch was first molded with silver threads, then dipped into melted plastic solution in black and finished by attaching a unique British brooch setting onto it. To me, this work represented the respect and admiration my students had for me, which means a lot.
